PORT CARBON - As the borough wraps up negotiations with the state Department of Transportation for the construction of a new Pottsville Street Bridge in 2014, council members discussed how to use additional PennDOT funding this summer during a work session Tuesday evening.
Through the Municipal Liquid Fuels Program, PennDOT supports municipalities by funding construction, reconstruction, maintenance and repair of public roads or streets. Allocation is based on the municipality's population and miles of roads.
James Tohill, the borough engineer, said the borough received $35,000 this year.
No decisions were made regarding the funds during the work session. John Davis, municipal services supervisor with PennDOT, will come to the borough Monday morning to evaluate possible projects.
One possible project discussed at the meeting involved repairs to Washington Street. Mayor Thomas Pavlick suggested the project, noting he has heard many complaints about the road from residents. Another project discussed was making more roadside sites accessible to people with disabilities.
After consulting with Davis on Monday, council members will announce a decision during the borough council meeting next Wednesday.
In other news, two council members were chosen to represent the borough on a newly formed American Legion and Scouting Building Committee. John Frank, borough vice president, will serve on the committee with Bearniece Shirley serving as alternate.
