PORT CARBON - Borough council decided to kick its ancient oil burner to the curb Tuesday and install a more efficient heating system at borough hall.
At its regular July meeting, the council decided to spend $9,000 to hire Padfield Plumbing and Heating, Saint Clair, to install a new gas burner at borough hall, according to Sandra Palokas, borough secretary/treasurer.
In other matters, the council opened bids for its 2012 Road Program and gave borough engineer James S. Tohill, Alfred Benesch & Co., Pottsville, permission to review the bids and selected the lowest and most responsible bidder, Palokas said.
The bids submitted contained prices for numerous options and Tohill said he was unable to do a simple breakdown to determine which of the bidders offered the lowest prices. The bidders were: Ronnie C. Folk Paving, Shoemakersville; Pennsy Supply, Wapwallopen; Landis C. Deck & Sons Site Contractors, Bernville; and Schuylkill Paving Inc., Schuylkill Haven, according to Tohill.
Also, borough police Chief Jon Bowman suggested the borough buy a security camera system for the police station.
The council is reviewing the specs and may consider buying the unit at its next meeting.
