n Frackville: The Frackville Recreation Board will sponsor a free pool party for all ages from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 8 at Frackville Memorial Pool, Pine Street. It will include a free swim and music by disc jockey Drew. The concession stand will be open.
n Maizeville: The annual St. John/St. Michael picnic will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Aug. 18 and noon to 8 p.m. Aug. 19 at the St. John Picnic Grove along Main Street in this section of Gilberton borough. The Pennsylvania Good Times will provide live music from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday and the Pennsylvania Villagers will perform from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday. There will be ethnic food including pyrohy (pierogies), holubtsi (halupkis stuffed cabbage), halushki (cabbage and noodles), bleenies (fried potato pancakes) and kobasa (kielbasa) as well as open fire kettle bean soup. Homemade desserts, beverages, games and novelties will also be available. A theme basket auction, featuring more than 30 baskets, will be conducted over the two-day picnic.
