MAHANOY CITY - Three men were scheduled to be arraigned late Sunday in connection with a fight that injured a borough police officer and another man earlier in the day.

Mahanoy City police Chief Mark J. Wiekrykas said two of the three men are facing felony charges in connection with the incident in the 1100 block of East Centre Street that injured Patrolman Charles Kovalewski and borough resident Todd Dunlap.

Both Kovalewski and Dunlap were treated at Pottsville area hospitals and released hours later.

All three suspects - their names weren't immediately released - were scheduled to be arraigned by Magisterial District Judge David A. Plachko at his Port Carbon courtroom.

Wiekrykas said the incident began at 5:14 p.m. when Kovalewski was called to the area for a report of a disturbance.

At the scene the officer found Dunlap and one of the suspects arguing and tried to intervene.

As Kovalewski told one of the men arrested that he was going to be charged with disorderly conduct, the man became agitated and Kovalewski attempted to place handcuffs on him.

According to Wiekrykas, the two other suspects then came out of a home and began to assault Kovalewski.

Dunlap and two borough firefighters tried to intervene. One of the men ran into the home, followed by Kovalewski.

When Kovalewski went in, another of the suspects closed the door so as not to allow Kovalewski to leave.

However, when a state police trooper arrived at the scene, the door was opened and the suspects taken into custody.

No other information was available late Sunday.
