Two men rescued

from stripping pit

TAMAQUA - Two men were rescued from a stripping pit in the borough on Wednesday.

An employee at the Schuylkill County Communications Center said a call came in at 7:09 p.m. for a rescue from the pit at Lehigh Natural Resources. The men were removed from the pit at 8 p.m., according to the communications center.

The men were taken to a hospital for observation.

Coaldale Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 responded to the scene. No additional information was available.

Police probe

multiple burglaries

NEW RINGGOLD - State police at Frackville are investigating two burglaries that occurred in East Brunswick Township between 8 p.m. Sept. 4 and 8 a.m. Monday.

The first incident occurred at 554 Indian Run Road where someone entered a vacant barn owned by Michael K. Mantz, New Ringgold, by removing a wall board and also entered a vacant home through a basement door.

Police said nothing was taken from the home and the only thing taken from inside the barn was a ladder that was then placed against an outside wall when the burglar or burglars fled.

The second burglary occurred at 9 Penny Lane where someone entered a seasonal hunting trailer and a shed at 6 Penny Lane and removed items valued at $1,880 including a weed-wacker, a chain saw, an air compressor, chain saws, a drill and power saw, hunting clothes, three trail cameras, gas cans, a propane tank and rolls of linoleum, police said.

The items and property are owned by Allen and Matthew Meitzler, both of Boyertown, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 570-874-5300.

Stolen card used

to make purchases

ORWIGSBURG - Two borough residents were the victims of fraud after someone took their debit card and made online purchases with it.

State police in Schuylkill Haven said the incident occurred between Sunday and Tuesday when the card of Jennifer and Ira Walton, 700 Raring Drive, North Manheim Township, was used for ten online purchases resulting in $537.43. The investigation continues.

Injury avoided in

Cressona collision

CRESSONA - Two people escaped injury after an accident in front of the entrance to the Cressona Mall on Route 61 on Tuesday.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said a 2004 Honda driven by Laura Morganelli, 21, of Bethlehem, and a 2004 Mazda 6s driven by John Zimmerman, 23, of Cressona, were involved in an accident.

Police said the crash occurred as Morganelli was waiting to turn left at the red light into the mall at 4:24 p.m.

Zimmerman was driving in the right lane of Route 61. Morganelli was waved to make the turn and drove into the intersection where she was hit by the Mazda in the right front bumper, police said.

Morganelli's car was turned southbound and went across the median of the entrance and stopped at the southbound guide rail, police said.

The Honda sustained moderate damage to the bumper and tire and was towed from the scene, police said.

Zimmerman's vehicle had significant damage to the front bumper and was also towed, police said.

Morganelli was wearing a seat belt and Zimmerman was not, police said.

Morganelli was cited as a result of the accident, police said.
