McADOO - Police in the borough will be out walking the beat more than in the past.

McAdoo Borough Council requested that the officers walk around the borough more instead of driving due to the high price of gasoline, which is now close to $4 per gallon.

Police Chief Jeff Wainwright said his officers already began walking more last month, when they put 820 fewer miles on the patrol cars compared to the previous month.

He told council his department would comply with the request.

Mayor Dane Watro said police also have been checking if residents are renewing their dog licenses and keeping their pets up to date on required shots. If they are not, the mayor said the dog owners will be asked to comply.

In a related matter, Michelle Barnhart, East Grant Street, told council the woman whose dog attacked her and her puppy while they walked in McAdoo has since moved out of the borough.

The woman also was cited, according to Barnhart, who suffered two bites that did not break the skin and underwent painful rabies shots as a precaution.

Barnhart also said the woman gave up her two dogs to a pound before leaving town.

Barnhart said she doesn't feel comfortable walking her dogs in the borough since the incident.

In other business, the council also asked for earlier copies of minutes for council members to look over before their monthly meetings.

The council also authorized sending a letter to the Hazleton Area School District to request that a gravel surface be left at the location where contractors have been parking after the McAdoo-Kelayres Elementary/Middle School construction project is finished.

Wainwright reminded residents that they can turn in unused and expired medication for disposal from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 29 at the borough building.
