n Orwigsburg: The Penn State Extension Master Gardener Program will present a session of garden information at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Orwigsburg Free Public Library, 214 Independence St. The session, which is open to the public, is titled Putting Your Garden to Bed. According to an extension release, fall is thought of as a slow time in the garden, but for the avid gardener, there are many tasks to accomplish before the ground freezes. Participants will learn which plants will need a final bit of fertilizer to help them store up energy for the winter. They will also about perennials that will benefit from division now and how to successfully do that. A range of other gardening activities will also be discussed and demonstrated. n Orwigsburg: The annual Service Ministry Bazaar is set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 6 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 215 N. Warren St. All proceeds will benefit the local community, according to a release. The event will include soups, barbecue, hot dogs, Dorothy's traditional nut rolls, Michael B's chili, baked goods, pies from Flat Hill Bakery, local crafts and vendors, homemade candy by Sandie Candie and a Chinese auction of gift baskets.
n Shenandoah: Shenandoah Community Watch meets at 6 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month in borough hall, Washington and Main Streets. Meetings are open to the public and new members are always welcome. Gordon Slater, SCW president, has called for more people to attend and become involved for the betterment of the community.
n Shenandoah: The first Cooper Classic Golf Tournament, to benefit the refurbishment of the J.W. Cooper Community Center, White and Lloyd streets, will be held Sept. 30 at Mountain Valley Golf Course, Barnesville. Former Philadelphia Eagles owner and Shenandoah native Jerry Wolman will be the tourney's special guest. Photos with Wolman will be available. The entry fee is $70 per golfer, which includes green fees and cart, awards dinner and deck party. There will be free beer and hot dogs for all golfers. The tournament is scramble-format with four hole-in-one prizes, closest-to-the-pin prize and longest drive prize. Trophies will go to the top three teams. Registration is 10 a.m. with tee off at 11 a.m. and the awards dinner - barbecue ribs and chicken with sides - at 5 p.m. The deck party will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. with music by Toolshed Jack. Non-golfers may attend the dinner and deck party for $25. The cost for the deck party only is $10. A designated driver will be available.
