MAHANOY CITY - A Mahanoy Area middle school student read his essay on the importance of public education at Thursday's school board meeting.
Superintendent Joie Green introduced eighth-grader Matthew Reed.
"He did an essay for the (Pennsylvania State Education Association) Leadership Conference entitled 'What a Public Education Means to Me,' " Green said. "Mr. (Michael) Heater (middle school principal) read it and felt that it was important for him to share with everyone."
"In today's competitive world, nothing is more important than a good education. For a student that wants to pay attention and do well, public education can be a key to the future," Reed said.
"Public schools are funded by the government and taxpayer dollars, so it is only fair that taxpayers should be able to express their concerns on how a school is run. I believe their involvement is vitally important to the school's success. There has to be a partnership between the school administration, the school board and the local tax-paying citizens. I believe children like to attend the school so they can express themselves as individuals, while at the same time adhering to the school code."
He continued, "First and foremost, school should be a fun place to learn. If it isn't, how can a school district grow?"
Reed spoke of his interest in extracurricular activities, which allow students to have fun, learn a sport and a skill.
"Public education provides a foundation for learning for students of many economic backgrounds," said Reed. "Even students who do not come from wealthy families have the same opportunities as every other student. It all depends on how you apply yourself."
He concluded, "I feel confident in knowing that I am receiving a great education in our public school system."
The board acted on the following Athletic Committee motions:
- Accepted the resignation of John Berta as assistant high school varsity softball coach, effective immediately.
- Appointed Kelly Gregg, Breinigsville, as a volunteer coach for the girls' basketball team.
High school Principal Thomas Smith announced that Anne Swokel, Barnesville, and Michael Wirtz, Mahanoy City, are the September students of the month. Heater announced that Samantha Gnall, Barnesville, and Michael Joseph, Mahanoy City, are also September students of the month.
The next school board meeting will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 19 rescheduled because of Thanksgiving Day.
