DEER LAKE - At least one person died Wednesday night in a three-vehicle wreck at routes 61 and 895 in Deer Lake.
State police at Schuylkill Haven responded to the accident shortly after 8 p.m. Traffic was blocked in the area and rerouted through Deer Lake Borough.
While not much information was available as of press time late Wednesday, state police Trooper James Nestico of the Schuylkill Haven station said at the scene that one person was confirmed dead. No further information on the person was available.
A red pickup truck could be seen in the right lane of Route 61 south while another vehicle was seen on its passenger side near the guide rail and glass was visible on the roadway. Yellow caution tape was put up near the scene at 8:50 p.m.
Trooper Bernie Walasavage of the state police crime unit said the accident was not a hit-and-run and that a press release would be issued later. The person who died was one of two people who had been traveling in the overturned vehicle.
Mary Flammer and her husband, Paul, Shoemakersville, said they witnessed part of the crash, during which they saw a vehicle rolling and the red pickup truck hit the vehicle as it was rolling. Flammer said she called 911 and that there were four occupants of the red pickup truck. No one appeared hurt in the pickup truck, so she went to the vehicle by the side of the guide rail.
"The driver was upside down hanging by the seat belt," she said.
She said the man was not able to talk to her and she later noticed a man on the other side of the guide rail.
"I didn't even see him fly out. It happened so fast," she said.
No further information was available from authorities late Wednesday.
