EXCELSIOR - One person was killed and another injured in a vehicle accident on an icy stretch of Route 901 between Ranshaw and Excelsior, Northumberlad County, on Monday night.
The victims' names were not available at press time, but police said that the deceased is an adult female, and the injured an adult male.
The accident occurred at 8:32 p.m. when a green Ford pickup truck went out of control on the slick bridge and rolled over a guard rail. At least one of the victims was ejected from the vehicle.
Jonathan Dupnock, 21, was driving west on Route 901 from his home in Excelsior when he saw the accident unfold in front of him.
"I saw the lights in front of me and I slowed down because I know that bridge can be icy," he said. "The second it hit the bridge, the truck went sideways. It flipped and the roof struck the guard rail."
Dupnock avoided the crash by driving into the opposite lane. He said the truck rolled two or three more times before it stopped.
The truck stopped 70 feet from the guard rail on its side and against two small trees 20 feet down a steep embankment.
Dupnock got out of his vehicle and yelled down to the truck. He found a male victim about 20 feet from the truck.
Emergency personnel accessed the injured man from a road at the bottom of the embankment. The male stood on his own power as he was led to an ambulance.
The extreme damage to the truck and precarious position against the trees made emergency personnel unsure if the second victim was still in the truck. A search for the second victim started as soon as possible, and Coal Township First Assistant Fire Chief Mike Timco attempted to search the vehicle.
At 9 p.m., approximately 30 minutes after the crash, the second victim was found in brush approximately 40 feet from the truck. Northumberland County Coroner James Kelley arrived at the scene about 9:30 p.m.
