N. Schuylkill school board approves termination of varsity football coach

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS - The North Schuylkill Board of Education approved the termination of Rick Geist as head varsity football coach during Wednesday's school board meeting.

The firing of Geist was approved retroactively, effective Oct. 31.

Geist was suspended for the remainder of the football season by school district official on Nov. 5 following a locker room tirade that occurred on Oct. 26 during halftime at the Panther Valley football game in Lansford.

According to district Superintendent Andrew D. Smarkanic, the school board approved the termination in a unanimous vote without any discussion.

"The board terminated Rick Geist from the football coaching position," Smarkanic said.

The school board said applicants need either recent high school and/or college football coaching experience.

In another related matter, the school board rescinded a motion made at the Aug. 15 meeting that appointed Geist as weight lifting coach for the current school year.

Smarkanic said there were only a few members of the public in attendance and no one asked questions about Geist and the votes. He said the meeting lasted 12 minutes.

In other business, the school board:

- Authorized Business Manager Robert Amos to sign the information request to receive the 2012 tax information from Berkheimer Association on earned income tax, which they use to verify the earnings from the occupation assessment tax.

- Authorized Amos to transfer $750,000 from the general fund to the Capital Improvement Fund in 2011-12 school year for the upcoming construction project.

- Approved a Custodial Procedures Manual for the maintenance staff compiled by Director of Building and Grounds Frank Brennan.

- Approved revisions to the 2012-13 school calendar due to weather cancellations caused by Hurricane Sandy on Oct. 29 and 30. The teacher in-service day on Jan. 21 will be canceled and will be a regular day for the students. The teacher in-service day will be scheduled for April 2, and April 3 will be the second make-up day for students.

- Approved a trip request for the North Schuylkill Chorus to Disney World in Orlando on the first Sunday of the last day of school in June 2014 at not cost to the school.

- Approved the Schuylkill Technology Center contracts for the transportation of students for the 2012-13 school year as follows: Frackville $48.50 per diem; Mar Lin at $90 per diem.

- Approved Brandi Kline as music director for the 2013 Theatre Arts Program at a salary of $800, and approved Kelly Stone as technical director for the program at a salary of $750.

The school board will hold its reorganization meeting at 7 p.m. Dec. 5, followed immediately by the regular monthly meeting.
