Alumnus lauded

Penn State Schuylkill campus announced that Andrew "Andy" Tellep is the 2012 Alumni Achievement Award recipient and will be honored at a dinner on campus in De-cember.

Tellep's dedicated service to Penn State includes two terms as Schuylkill Campus faculty senate chairman, one term as Capital College faculty senate chairman and three terms as a faculty senator representing Schuylkill campus in the University Faculty Senate at University Park. He served on many campus and university committees and was a Math Options program volunteer to promote mathematics-related careers for women. He helped lead Project Empower to help faculty introduce technology into their classrooms.

Tellep represented Penn State and Schuylkill campus at various national and international conferences by presenting papers dealing with computer science education. He was invited by IBM to participate in an international workshop on problem-solving and critical thinking. As an adviser, he coordinated project classes that placed computer science students in many local businesses and organizations to give students valuable practical experience.

He serves as volunteer chairman of the faculty/staff committee within the "For the Future Campaign" at PSU-Schuylkill. The campaign raises funds for student scholarships and support.

He and his wife, Dr. Michele Tellep, were the first faculty on campus to endow a scholarship. The Palko-Tellep Scholarship, which is given to a Schuylkill County resident attending Penn State Schuylkill, was started by the Palko and Tellep families.

Tellep resides in Mar Lin with his wife and their son, Michael, an engineering student at University Park campus. He will be the featured speaker at a mentor luncheon sponsored by the Office of Career Services and Penn State Schuylkill Alumni Society at noon Tuesday.
