BARNESVILLE - Flames tore through the night sky Sunday as they destroyed a large garage in Ryan Township.
Crew were called about 8 p.m. to the garage owned by John Maddis at 413 Back Road, Ryan Township police said.
Fire officials said the garage, located near the intersection with State Road, was completely engulfed in flames when they arrived.
Due to a lack of fire hydrants in the area, tanker trucks were called from as far away as Shenandoah to shuttle water to portable dams set up at the site.
Firefighters from Ryan Township, Hometown, Quakake, Mahanoy City, Delano and Shenandoah responded to the call and had most of the flames knocked down within 20 minutes.
The Altamont Fire Company near Frackville also responded with its Rapid Intervention Team.
During the initial stages of the fire, several explosions could be heard coming from inside the structure.
Firefighters at the scene said the explosions were probably caused by propane tanks that were stored inside.
Ryan Township fire officials said it was too early to determine what sparked the fire and that the investigation is continuing.
Ryan Township EMS was at the scene but no injuries were reported.
Both State Road and Back Road were closed throughout the fire allowing easier access for the tanker trucks to get to and from the scene.
