Brakes fail, causing accident

PORT CARBON - Two people escaped injury when the 1999 Dodge Stratus they were in crashed into a fence at East Norwegian and Orchard streets about 4 p.m. Friday.

Port Carbon police said they were called to the area and were told by the 17-year-old Port Carbon man driving the car that the brakes failed while he was trying to stop at the intersection.

Both the driver and a 17-year-old Pottsville boy who was a passenger were not hurt and were wearing their seat belts, police said.

The car sustained severe damage and had to be towed from the scene, police said.

1 injured in accident

ELIZABETHVILLE - One person suffered minor injuries in a crash that occurred on East Broad Street in Dauphin County community about 12:40 a.m. Friday.

State police at Lykens said Ryan Lucas, 18, of Lykens, was driving a 1998 Saturn west when he lost control and struck a parked 1983 Lincoln Continental, pushing it backwards into a 1998 Volkswagen Beetle.

Police said Lucas was determined to be driving under the influence of a controlled substance and placed under arrest.

Lucas and a passenger in his car - Cameron Kerwin, 19, of Elizabethville, escaped injury while another passenger, Jordan Dietrich, 21, of Lykens, suffered minor injuries.

Police said that Lucas will be charged with careless driving as a result of the crash and that Elizabethville firefighters assisted at the scene.

Air cleaner taken from PennDOT

FORESTVILLE - State police at Frackville are investigating a theft from a vehicle that occurred at Forest Lane and Big Diamond Road in Cass Township between 2 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Police said someone stole an exhaust pipe and air cleaner from a PennDOT back hoe that was parked in the area and fled the scene.

Cass Township police were not on duty at the time and ask that anyone with information call them at 570-874-5300, police said.

Tamaqua man taken into custody

HOMETOWN - A 38-year-old Tamaqua man was recently taken into custody by Rush Township police and arraigned on felony charges.

Police said Daniel H. Donovan was charged with burglary, criminal trespass, theft and receiving stolen property after he entered a home at 11 South St. numerous times and stole more than $8,000 worth of jewelry items.

Donovan will now have to appear for a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Stephen J. Bayer, Tamaqua, police said.

Lykens man injured in crash

FRIEDENSBURG - A 39-year-old Lykens man suffered minor injuries when the 2002 Acura he was driving crashed on Route 443 in Wayne Township about 1:45 a.m. Saturday.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Arturo Leon was driving east when he went off the road and struck a culvert, causing the vehicle to spin counter clockwise and continue onto a grass lawn for about 150 feet.

The vehicle then continued another 20 feet across an asphalt driveway and struck a dirt embankment next to a house, police said.

Police said that Leon showed signs of being under the influence and was taken to Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street for a blood alcohol test and also for treatment of injuries he suffered in the crash.

The investiagtion is ongoing, police said.

Man faces DUI charges

ORWIGSBURG - A 23-year-old Orwigsburg man is facing charges of DUI after a traffic stop on Route 61, just south of South Liberty Street in West Brunswick Township, at 2:25 a.m. Nov. 6.

Police said they stopped a vehicle driven by Harrison Rinehart III for having a headlight out from the man hitting a deer just before to the stop.

The man was found to be under the influence and taken into custody for DUI, police said.
