Schuylkill County residents can expect to wake up to snow today.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the county that will remain until 1 p.m. today.

Accumulations of 2 to 4 inches of snow are expected, according to the NWS.

"Tomorrow morning's rush hour will be a little big slick," said Craig Evanego, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

He said about an inch should fall overnight.

Tony Mach, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, State College, agreed.

"Most of the snow will get to your area around dawn," he said, adding it will end probably by noon or early in the afternoon.

Today's temperatures should be in the mid to high 30s, Evanego said.

Temperatures throughout the remainder of the week should be in the upper 30s with sunny skies. The present outlook does not call for any additional precipitation.

"It'll be a chilly week," Evanego said.

Locally, municipalities have been preparing for the white stuff.

"It's not suppose to be a lot. We're ready for it," Norwegian Township Supervisor Leo Grace said Monday.

Four plow trucks will be ready, he said, adding an additional driver will be on standby if needed.

Dan Kelly, superintendent of streets, said Pottsville is prepared with 12 plow trucks.

Anti-skid material will be used if circumstances dictate, he said.

Customers were also getting ready for the winter season.

"We sold a few bags of salt and a couple snow shovels," said Jolene Renninger, store manager at Hadesty's Ace Hardware, Pottsville. She estimated about six bags had been sold recently.

She said Monday's purchases were probably due more to the winter season.

The store carries a wide variety of items. For larger accumulations, snow blowers are also available for purchase.

Winter items are also available at Lowe's in Pottsville.

"We certainly have the supplies," said Dennis Schaffer, store manager.

PennDOT recommends motorists take precautions during winter weather.

According to a press release, motorists should slow down on ice or snow-covered roads, pay more attention while driving and prepare an emergency kit that includes food, a blanket, non-perishable food, water, first aid supplies and a snow shovel.

Motorists should also make sure their vehicles are prepared for the winter, PennDOT said.

Checking tire pressure and fluids is important, the department said in its 2012-13 winter services guide.

In District 5, which includes Schuylkill County and five others, the winter budget is $16.4 million.

Locally, the budget for the Schuylkill Haven office is $3.8 million for the 2012-13 winter season, the document states. The amount spent last winter was $2.2 million. Salt spread on roads accounted for 10,781 tons.
