ORWIGSBURG - A Pottsville man sits in prison after waiving his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday on charges stemming from an alleged theft in July from a borough supermarket.
Archie D. Ciccanti, 32, of 402 Market Square Apt. D-2, faces charges of retail theft and conspiracy. Magisterial District Judge James R. Ferrier bound over those charges for Schuylkill County Court after Ciccanti waived his right to a hearing.
Orwigsburg police alleged that Ciccanti and an accomplice conspired to, and did, steal $400 worth of merchandise from Boyer's Food Market, 329 S. Liberty St., at 6:42 p.m. July 27.
Police said Ciccanti and his accomplice entered the store and left with two shopping carts full of items. One cart contained meat and seafood, while the other contained paper towels and drinks, according to police.
The incident was recorded on video surveillance, police said.
Ciccanti remains in prison in lieu of $2,500 straight cash bail pending further court action on the charges.
Other defendants whose cases Ferrier considered Tuesday, the charges against each one and the judge's dispositions of the matters included:
Ainsley J. Frey, 20, of 218B Frisbie Ave., Orwigsburg; driving under the influence, purchase, consumption, possession or transportation of alcoholic beverages, disregarding traffic lane and careless driving; right to preliminary hearing waived, charges bound over for court.
Dennis B. Hewes, 36, of 1140 Valley Road, Pottsville; receiving stolen property; right to preliminary hearing waived, charge bound over for court.
