ASHLAND - The Schuylkill County Visitors Bureau feted the county Veterans of the Vietnam War Post 29 and Schuylkill County's VISION during the 13th annual Tourism Recognition Awards and holiday party Tuesday evening at the Mineshaft Café.
The awards are issued each year to acknowledge citizens, businesses, community organizations and government entities contributing to further the thriving and growing tourism industry in Schuylkill County, according to Patrick M. "Porcupine Pat" McKinney, visitors bureau president and awards coordinator as well as environmental education coordinator for the Schuylkill Conservation District.
"It's not only the season of giving, but it's also the season of recognition and appreciation. That's what we're here for tonight, to recognize those who have given their time to help further the mission of the visitors bureau," McKinney said.
The mission of the Schuylkill County Visitors Bureau is to promote tourism, encourage new tourism development, enhance the image of the county and significantly increase the number of visitors.
Schuylkill County Commissioner Gary Hess also serves as the director for the county conservation district.
"I think this is a great group because we need to showcase our county," Hess said. "Especially when you live here, you don't realize a lot of the spectacular things here that are right under your nose."
The bureau presented its Tourism Volunteer Award to Post 29.
The Vietnam War veterans have volunteered at many local events, including Schuylkill Brewfest, Island Fest, The Great Pottsville Cruise, Pine Grove Autumn Stroll and Halloween Parade and Schuylkill Haven Borough Day, McKinney said.
Schuylkill County's VISION received the Tourism Business/Organization Award. McKinney said VISION has instilled pride and community through various partnerships and collaborations.
Keri Johnson, Hegins, received the Tourism Employee Award. She is communications coordinator for the bureau and has shown creativity and enthusiasm for her work and innovative approach to the field, bringing more tourists to Schuylkill County, McKinney said.
The Schuylkill Conservation District, Pottsville, received the Governor Partner Award.
McKinney said the district has worked to increase awareness and appreciation for county resources and has coordinated initiatives to remediate impaired water resources while managing Sweet Arrow Lake County Park, Pine Grove.
