A Pottsville man was behind bars Thursday after Pottsville police arrested him Wednesday on drug charges.
Jamie Duncan McCabe, 34, of Pottsville, was charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, heroin, a felony; possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, cocaine, a felony; possession of a controlled substance, heroin, a misdemeanor; possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, a misdemeanor; possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine, a misdemeanor; and driving under suspension.
Police said they stopped McCabe, who was driving a Chevrolet, at 12:11 a.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of North Centre Street because they knew his license was suspended.
The department's Drug Investigation Unit had also informed the officers the vehicle McCabe was driving had recently been involved in the sale and trafficking of illegal drugs in the area.
McCabe admitted to police he knew his license was suspended.
Police said the owner of the vehicle, Laura Keck, 22, of Barnesville, was a backseat passenger. They had warned her within the last week that McCabe's license was suspended and she could not allow him to drive the vehicle or she would be arrested.
Further investigation determined McCabe and Keck were returning from Reading and, with their consent, police searched the vehicle and found 36 packets of heroin, with a $540 local street value, nine packets of cocaine, $300 local street value, and one packet of methamphetamine.
On McCabe's person, police found 20 packets of heroin, $300 local street value, identical to those seized in the car.
McCabe, Keck and two other passengers in the vehicle, James Culbert Jr., 39, and Sammy Jo Rohrbach, 26, both of Pottsville, all admitted to traveling to Reading together so McCabe could get the drugs for the group and, after buying the drugs, they returned to Pottsville intending to use and distribute them.
The investigation is continuing and charges are pending against Keck, Culbert and Rohrbach.
McCabe, who was free on bail in another case, was arraigned before on-duty Magisterial District Judge David A. Platchko, Port Carbon, and committed to Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $50,000 straight cash bail.
