The Gillingham Charter School is planning a community event for National School Choice Week next month.
At the board of trustees meeting Thursday night, Christie Werkheiser, director of organizational development, said that National School Choice Week is held from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2. The week spotlights the variety of school options for children.
According to the NSCW website, the point of the week is "to provide a concentrated focus for our mission - effective education options for every child - a time for the media and the public to hear our resounding message and a time to bring new voices to the chorus."
Lori Quinn, vice president of Gillingham's board of trustees and director of public relations and marketing, said the school is looking into having a screening of a school choice film so the community can get involved and will also be holding a kindergarten open house that week to generate interest for the next year.
"It'll be a community event to give more information about having school choices," Quinn said.
In other business, the board also approved a motion to consult with an engineer, architect and contractor to discuss space usage.
While Gillingham is renovating a gym in the parish building of the former St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville, which it will begin using in January for gym classes, Werkheiser said the discussion will be about the school facility in general as it continues to grow.
