Ashland: The Schuylkill County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees is participating in the statewide PASR 75th Anniversary Scholarship Program. PASR members are Schuylkill County retirees who worked in public schools and had a positive influence on commonwealth students. The $500 scholarship will be awarded to a resident of Schuylkill County who is currently a college junior pursuing a degree in public education at an accredited Pennsylvania college or university. To be considered for the scholarship award, the student must be enrolled in a public education program such as elementary or secondary education. Qualified applicants should send a letter of interest, requesting a PASR's 75th Anniversary Scholarship application, to Margaretta Bolich, 65 Bolich Road, Ashland, PA 17921 on or before Feb 5.
Orwigsburg: The Blue Mountain Area School District will hold kindergarten and first-grade registration at the Elementary East and Elementary West schools. For kindergarten, children must be age 5 by Sept. 1. Children who did not attend kindergarten but are eligible for first grade - age 6 by Sept. 1 - also must be registered. Registration at Elementary East will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 29 (snow date March 21). Registration at Elementary West will be 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. March 6 (snow date March 13). Registration information packets may be picked up at the elementary office beginning Feb. 6. For registration, parents/guardians will need proof of residency, proof of child's age (birth certificate) and immunization records.
Pottsville: Theresa Santai Gaffney, Schuylkill County register of wills and clerk of the orphan's court, recently provided the following report for December: Estates processed, 62; marriage licenses issued, 47; adoptions completed, 2; inheritance tax remitted to the commonwealth, $851,727.27; county fees collected, $14,489.25.

Pottsville: The Tuscarora RC Club will feature its model airplane display Feb. 4 and 5 at Fairlane Village mall. Model airplanes of all sizes will be shown at center court during regular mall hours. Club members will be on hand to answer questions about the models - which can actually fly.
Ringtown: The Friends of the Ringtown Library support group has scheduled its annual used book sale for April 14 and 15 in the Schuylkill Mall, Frackville. Donations of gently used books, audio books, movies, puzzles and board games can be dropped off at the library, 132 W. Main St., through April 11. Encyclopedias, textbooks or news, science and technology magazines will not be accepted. Donors are asked to not put book sale donations in the library book return box. For more information about the sale, visit www.ringtownlibrary.org. The library will host free toddler and preschool storytime sessions in February and March. Preschool storytime for children ages 3 to 5 will be held at 11:15 a.m. Mondays Feb. 6 through March 26. Toddler Time for children ages 18 to 36 months will be at 11:15 a.m. Thursdays Feb. 2 to 16 and March 1 to 15. Children must be accompanied by an adult. All local families with preschool-age children are welcome. The program, according to library officials, will enable socialization and advance pre-reading skills. Advance registration at the library is required. The library currently has available a selection of the most frequently requested federal income tax forms.
Shenandoah: The Shenandoah Rotary Club is continuing to push its corn brooms sale. Brooms are available at the local branch of First National Bank, Main and Lloyd streets, according to Rotarian Mary Ann Link. Anyone interested in buying one is welcome to stop at the bank. The cost is $13 each. Proceeds benefit Rotary community service projects.
