Schuylkill Haven upgrading public bathrooms

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - The bathrooms at the borough hall and recreation center are getting a makeover to make them compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

"It's basically the same layout, just bigger," Eric Johnson, owner of EA Johnson Group Inc., Schuylkill Haven, which is doing the work, said Tuesday. "Everything's going to be more efficient."

Community Development Block Grant funds will mostly cover the $67,700 total for both renovations, borough Manager Scott Graver said this week. The projects were awarded individually. The bathroom renovations at the borough office were $36,350, while the rec center cost $33,350.

The work, which began Jan. 2, includes creating space for a wheelchair by removing a closet, installing bars in toilet stalls, new fixtures and tiling, as well as plumbing work.

The project could be finished within two weeks.

While work continues, the public can use another rest room at the rec center, Graver said.

Meanwhile, at borough hall, a portable toilet was set up for workers.

Borough Secretary Kathy Killian said the change was a little inconvenient at first because there was no heater. After a heater was added, the only remaining inconvenience is walking outside, she said.

Improvements at borough hall started about three weeks ago, Johnson said.

"That one's a little more extensive work," because the building is older, he said.

Moreover, the rest rooms in borough hall will have tile on walls and the floor, he said.

Killian said black and white tiles were chosen for the rest rooms.
