Ice skating? Not just yet

Ice skaters will have to wait a bit longer if they want to skate at Rotary Park, Pottsville, or Stoyer's Dam, Schuylkill Haven, and other area locations.

A portable ice skating rink at Rotary Park was not up as of Tuesday.

But that's something that's up to the weather.

Dan Kelly, Pottsville superintendent of streets, said Tuesday that if the weather stays cold, the rink might still be installed at the park.

"I really haven't looked at the long-range forecast," he said, adding that ideally, it would be best if the rink were in place by the end of the month.

City Administrator Thomas Palamar said Jan. 4 that the city would have liked to install the rink within seven to 10 days. However, he did not return a call for comment Tuesday.

Previously, he said, the weather will determine if the rink is taken out of storage.

Brian Murray, highway foreman for Schuylkill Haven borough, didn't seem optimistic about the chances for skating on Stoyer's Dam.

"As far as it getting thick enough for people to skate on, I highly doubt it because it's almost February," he said.

He drove by Bubeck Park on Tuesday and didn't have to measure any ice because there wasn't any.

On Jan. 9, he said, there were 3 inches of ice but it mostly melted by Jan 11.

At least 6 inches of ice are needed for save skating.

In an email, borough Manager Scott Graver said, "Although there is a forecast for extended frigid temperatures, I can't really speculate on when the ice will be thick enough to skate. At this time there still is no ice skating allowed."

Both Locust Lake and Tuscarora state parks permit ice skating, but as of Tuesday, ice was measured at 2 inches - not appropriate for skating.

"I'm not comfortable with people going out on either lake today," Lew Williams, parks manager, said, acknowledging that people had called wanting to know about the condition of the lakes.

According to the National Weather Service, State College, the high temperature for today will be 13 degrees and in the 20s for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
