GORDON - Flames destroyed a home in the borough Wednesday night, sending one person to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Firefighters were called to 322 Hobart St. about 9 p.m. and found heavy fire and smoke pouring from the second floor and eaves of the building.

Butler Township police said initial reports indicated someone was trapped inside the home but it was quickly learned that all of the occupants managed to escape.

One resident suffered smoke inhalation and was taken by Ashland EMS to Shamokin Hospital for treatment.

Police said officers entered the building while firefighters were responding and made it up to the top of a stairway before being told everyone had escaped.

Firefighters from Gordon, Ashland, Mahanoy City and Fountain Springs responded to the blaze along with Rapid Intervention Teams from Altamont and Englewood.

The American Red Cross was at the scene to assist the family that was displaced by the fire.

Police said it is believed at least two people lived in the home but their names were not immediately available.

Firefighters struggled in 5-degree temperatures and managed to bring the fire under control in about an hour. Firefighting equipment such as ladders and hoses were covered with ice and residents helped firefighters by spreading ashes and rock salt on the streets and sidewalks so no one would fall while battling the fire.
