From running attire and '80's hairdos to casual wear and formal gowns, 17 women selected outfits to show off their personalities to a crowded Pottsville Club during the Greater Pottsville Winter Carnival Senior Princess Fashion Show on Sunday evening.
"This is a great group of girls. I think they are having a great time and they have been bonding well since the beginning," Dee Boris, chairwoman of the Senior Princess Committee, said Sunday.
Boris said it was up to the contestants to pick their attire, anything from casual to formal. She said contestants usually pick attires that reflect their personalities.
That is what Jeselyn Heaps, Pottsville, and Sierra Salle, Kaska, had in mind when they chose their outfits for the fashion show.
Heaps, who enjoys running, was wearing black jogging attire with a white headband.
"It's comfortable," Heaps said. "I'm not someone who gets up in the morning and gets dressed right away. This is what I wear when I go running."
Heaps said it was the first time she has ever been involved in a pageant. Heaps said she decided to enter the pageant this year after Salle and other friends told her how much fun they have doing it. She also said she was looking forward to meeting new people.
"I'm not a big 'girly' girl," Heaps said. "This is not what I expected, but it's been fun so far and I'm excited to wear a dress. Now that we met each other, I made new friends that I have a lot in common with."
Salle was decked out in a colorful '80s outfit and had her hair puffed up with a bow.
"I did the '80s because it's coming back in style and I wanted to show it off," Salle said.
Salle said it was her second time in a pageant.
"It's been fun so far," Salle said.
The theme for the 46th annual Greater Pottsville Winter Carnival is "Hard Rockin' Coal County 2013."
After they were done modeling their attire, each contestant answered a question asked by Master of Ceremonies Henry Nyce, publisher of The Republican-Herald.
