The damage in three operating rooms in Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street will cost Schuylkill Health Inc. $6,669.47, Colleen B. Shevokas, the hospital's director of surgical services, said Wednesday.

The loss of supplies came to $3,563.72. The salary cost associated with the incident were $3,005.75 and the maintenance costs, repairs to locks and drywall, cost $100, Shevokas said.

On Sunday, Pottsville police charged Larry Dettery, 34, with breaking into three operating rooms on the seventh floor, according to the affidavit of probable cause filed in the office of Magisterial District Judge James K. Reiley, Pottsville.

"We will be seeking restitution from this person," John E. Simodejka, president and CEO of Schuylkill Health, said Tuesday.

He said that the damage mostly involved supplies that were knocked over or put on the floor.

Police charged Dettery with criminal trespass, criminal mischief, possession of drug paraphernalia, persistent disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. He was placed in Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $75,000 straight cash bail and was still incarcerated Wednesday, according to a prison spokesman.

According to reports, Dettery had accompanied a friend to the hospital Sunday and arrived at 6:30 a.m. Sunday and remained there about ten hours with the patient.

However, at 5:36 p.m. Sunday, Gary Major, a security officer at the South Jackson Street hospital, called city police to report Dettery was causing a disturbance on the seventh-floor operating room suite, according to court records.

Pottsville police found him hiding in a recovery room. He had pushed a hospital bed against the door, according to the affidavit.

Pottsville Patrolman John Mohl said Dettery may have been under the influence of bath salts; however, a toxicology test is needed to determine that. Mohl could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
