Philadelphia man arrested on drug charges in Minersville

MINERSVILLE - Minersville police arrested a Philadelphia man Tuesday and charged him with selling drugs in the borough.

The arrest led to officers learning Haadee A. Bennett was wanted on outstanding warrants from state police as well as a warrant from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

Minersville police charged Bennett, 4633 Fernhill Road, with delivery of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, both felony offenses, as well as a misdemeanor offense of possession of a controlled substance.

The charges stem from a 6:25 p.m. incident at Pine and North Fourth streets. An investigation determined Bennett or "D" had two $50 bags of crack cocaine for sale.

Police arranged to buy drugs from Bennett, sending an undercover officer to the area to meet the man.

Bennett arrived in a vehicle with a woman, pulled alongside the officer and got out. Police said he got into the back seat of the officer's vehicle.

Police said Bennett handed the officer a pink baggie of a chunky white substance that appeared to be cocaine and was given $50 in pre-recorded money.

Bennett then said he had another bag of cocaine for sale and he would hold if for two hours in case the officer decided to buy it.

Other officers arrived and arrested Bennett as he was getting out of the vehicle. Police said another pink baggie with the white substance was found in the area where Bennett got out.

That bag, police said, was identical to the bag the man sold to the undercover officer.

The material in the bags tested positive for cocaine.

While Bennett was in custody, police learned of two outstanding warrants by state police troopers from the Frackville station, one for violating a protection from abuse order and one for contempt of court. Those warrants stem from incident at 222 E. Jackson St. in Port Carbon on Sept. 23, 2012.

Despite having a protection from abuse order against him, police said Bennett called a woman about 12:10 p.m. from a blocked number and said he wanted to meet and talk to her. During the conversation, Bennett told the woman he knows where she lives and would "put his hands on her" if she did not meet him.

That same day, at 7:15 p.m., police charged Bennett with contempt for violation of order or agreement after he appeared outside of the woman's home and tried calling her on the telephone, again from a blocked number.

Reiley arraigned Bennett on the state police warrants and set bail at 10 percent of $10,000 for each.

Minersville police Chief Michael Combs credited his officers for apprehending Bennett and taking him off the streets.

"He has a long criminal history and is where he belongs," Combs said of Bennett being committed to prison.

Bennett will now have to answer to the charges against him before Magisterial District Judge David A. Plachko, Port Carbon.
