SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - The Schuylkill Haven Borough Council approved the hiring of two part-time police officers for the borough Wednesday.
Pending the completion of necessary requirements such as a psychology exam, physical fitness test and other things, they could start by the end of the week, said Schuylkill Haven police Chief Jeffrey Walcott Thursday.
Paul Olson III, 32, Pottsville, a former Pottsville police department officer who was laid off from the force in December, and Matthew Cavallo, 22. Reading, were selected.
Cavallo recently graduated from the Reading Police Academy, Walcott said.
The officers would work on an as needed basis, Walcott said, adding they will be an asset to the force.
Starting salary is $18 an hour with a one year probation, which increases to $19 an hour after the first year.
More officers are possible.
"We do anticipate hiring more," Borough Manager Scott Graver said Thursday.
Ideally, Walcott said three more part-time officers are possible. He did not have a time frame. The part time officers can help relieve overtime costs, he said.
The council also acted to promote officer Warren Firing to sergeant effective March 3. He will replace Sgt. Robert Phillips who will retire in March. He has been with the borough police department for 25 years, Graver said.
His retirement was acted on in January by the council.
