Students from all over the Pottsville Area School District came to show off their basketball skills Sunday during the Hot Shot Contest in Martz Hall sponsored by the Pottsville Recreation Commission.
The competition was for boys and girls ages 9 to 14.
The free competition started at 4 p.m. and there were separate contests for boys and girls.
"We've been doing this for as long as I can remember," Mary Quirk, Pottsville Recreation Commission director, said. "It used to be the Pepsi Hot Shot. Pepsi sponsored it years and years ago but we've been doing it for a long time."
Quirk said that there were three age groups - 9 to 10, 11 to 12 and 13 to 14.
Before the contest started, there was demonstration to show the contestants what to do.
Once it started, each had one minute to dribble from half-court to shoot from "hot spots" in any sequence.
They could only receive scores for two lay-ups, while all other shots had to be made from any of the five hot spots marked on the court.
Contestants received bonus points if they shot from all five hot spots and one point was subtracted for each infraction of walking, palming or double dribbling.
"We break it down boys and girls so the girls aren't shooting against the boys," Quirk said.
One of the contestants, Kade Henninger, 9, of Orwigsburg, said he also played on a basketball team and was excited for the competition.
"I think I'm doing great," Henninger said.
Quirk said that the first-, second- and third-place winners received gift certificates to Schuylkill Valley Sports.
