n Pottsville: Pottsville Rotary Club President-elect Clint Del Valle recently gave a talk to members about the history of the Rotary wheel logo and how to prepare an "elevator pitch" about Rotary. The wheel, he said, is the first known logo for Rotary and was originated the year Rotary was founded, 1905. Basically, he said, it was a simple wagon wheel. He showed various changes in the logo that developed over the years, including a wheel sitting on clouds that resembled dust being raised and the first use of the word "International" on the logo. He showed a logo from the Pottsville Rotary Club circa 1915-1920 that no current club member had previously seen. In 1920, more cogs were added to the logo and several spokes were removed and in 1924, a keyway was included and the logo has remained the same since. An "elevator pitch," Del Valle said, is what you would say to someone in an elevator, where you know you may only have that person's attention for a few seconds or until the elevator door opens and one of you gets out, or someone else gets on. He said all Rotarians should have an answer ready when asked, "Why did you join Rotary?" or "What do you get out of Rotary?"
