Commissioners approve reallocation of funds for county bridge project

The Schuylkill County Commissioners approved the reallocation of liquid fuels funds for county bridge projects during the commissioners' public meeting Wednesday.

Project completion reports will be filed with PennDOT for the bridges on Mill Road over Deep Creek in Hubley Township and on Greenwood Street over Panther Creek in Tamaqua. The total repair cost for the bridge in Hubley Township was $240,548.19 and the remaining $59,451.81 in the project's budget will go back into the liquid fuels fund. The bridge in Tamaqua had a total repair cost of $233,095.53 and the remaining budget of $28,164.49 will also return to the liquid fuels fund.

An addition of $215,000 for repairs to the county bridge on Broad Street over the Schuylkill River in Schuylkill Haven was also approved by the commissioners, bringing the project total to $715,000.

A repair investigation contract with Alfred Benesch & Co. for the bridge on Maple Avenue, which extends off of the Pottsville/Minersville Highway just in front of Palermo Pizza and Restaurant, Minersville, was extended until Dec. 31, 2012. The contract was set to expire on Dec. 31, 2011.

The commissioners also agreed to execute an agreement that was made with the previous board and Heim Construction, Pottsville, on Dec. 14, 2011, for repairs to the bridge to "The Island" in Schuylkill Haven.

Following the commissioners' meeting, the salary board approved the appointment of Karen Vandak, Coaldale, to full-time assistant director of nursing at Rest Haven at a salary of $51,835.

During the retirement board, the county controller issued his monthly report.

According to the January report, five members received annuities totaling $1,118,621.30, 13 members received refunds totaling $61,196.66, two members requested rollovers of $109,591.35, and two members passed away with a remaining annuity of $18.97.

As of Jan. 31, the total market value of the retirement fund was $99,746,609. As of Wednesday, the total market value of the fund is $101,372,701.02.

Commissioner Gary Hess was not at this week's meetings due to illness.

The commissioners and salary board will hold their regular worksession meetings on Wednesday.
