SHENANDOAH - A woman who jumped from a third-floor window to escape a fire in her home Feb. 23 has died.

Lisa Goiga, 48, who lived at 36 W. Coal St., died earlier this month at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, from injuries she suffered in the fall.

Rick Stump, Montour County chief deputy coroner, informed authorities on March 7 that the woman died of "traumatic brain injuries," according to Shenandoah police Patrolman Kirk Kirkland.

Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn did not return a call Monday for additional information.

Goiga jumped from the window as firefighters were arriving at the scene of the 3:20 a.m. fire that damaged buildings on West Coal and North Jardin streets.

The woman's boyfriend, Dean Tessitore, 52, was rescued by firefighters from a third-floor window a short distance from where Goiga jumped.

Tessitore was taken to Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street, where he was admitted for smoke inhalation and has since been released.

Flames destroyed buildings at 32, 24, 36, 38 and 40 W. Coal St. along with homes at 125, 127 and 129 N. Jardin St., according to borough Fire Marshal Rick Examitas.

Examitas said that Goiga was taken to Geisinger by ambulance because all medical helicopters were grounded due to inclement weather.

State police fire marshal Trooper Michael J. Kowalick of Troop L headquarters in Reading is investigating the fire with assistance from Trooper Thomas Finn.

Kowalick said it is believed the fire started in the apartment of Tessitore and Goiga and spread from there. He said that he is classifying the cause of the blaze as undetermined but said that the investigation is ongoing.

Attempts to reach Kowalick on Monday were unsuccessful.

Examitas said that crews arriving on scene quickly realized the magnitude of the flames and construction of the buildings that included common roofs. The fire quickly went to four alarms, bringing in volunteers from surrounding communities to assist.
