Burglary probed

in Orwigsburg

ORWIGSBURG - Borough police are investigating a burglary that occurred between 4 p.m. Saturday and 3:40 p.m. Sunday at 310 W. Mifflin St.

Police said someone forced his or her way into the home and stole several tools and carpentry items. Among the items taken were an electric paint sprayer, a portable grinder, a portable reciprocating saw, a portable circular saw, a portable drill, a yellow and black Stanley tool box, a work lamp and a Skihl portable sander.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to call them at 570-366-3102. All information received will remain confidential.

2 men charged

in Port Carbon

PORT CARBON - Two men were charged by borough police after an incident at 11:28 p.m. March 2 at 101 Jackson St.

Police said William J. Ruff, 36, of New Philadelphia, was charged with disorderly conduct while Steven A. Schmidt, 27, of Frackville, was charged with public drunkenness. Both men will now have to answer to the charges before Magisterial District Judge David A. Plachko.

Police said officers saw Ruff urinating on bags of garbage on the sidewalk and Schmidt, who was intoxicated, vomiting on the sidewalk.

New Philadelphia police assisted at the scene, police said.

The North Central Regional Sobriety Checkpoint DUI Taskforce announced that Sobriety Checkpoints and Roving DUI Patrols will be conducted today through Monday on routes 61, 183, 901, 209, 1006, 309, 443, 895, 125, 25, 924 and 54.

Travelers are reminded to call 911 if they suspect a drunk driver or to call, toll-free, 888-UNDER21, to report underage drinking.

Check stolen

from vehicle

FRACKVILLE - Borough police are investigating a theft that occurred at 114 S. Nice St. between March 8 and 10.

Police said Kenneth Knittle reported that a personal check in the amount of $100 made out to him from a woman was stolen from the middle console of his vehicle where he had it stored in a bank envelope.

The vehicle was parked unattended, and police said Knittle told officers that it could have been left open by a relative who was looking for something inside but he was unsure. The man was advised to inform the person who wrote the check to inform him if someone tries to cash the check.

Anyone with information is asked to call police through the Schuylkill County Communications Center at 570-462-1992.

Tractor-trailers

collide on I-81

NEWTOWN - State police at Frackville are investigating a crash of two tractor-trailers in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 at mile marker 110 in Frailey Township about noon Monday.

Police said both drivers, who were not identified, were taken to area hospitals for medical attention by EMS personnel and that the right southbound lane of the highway was closed for about four hours.

An investigation is continuing, and police said additional information will be made available when it becomes available.

Donaldson, Tremont and Newtown firefighters along with Tremont EMS and West Schuylkill ALS assisted at the scene, police said.
