Today is the first day of spring but apparently Mother Nature didn't get the memo.
Areas of Schuylkill County received 2 1/2 to 5 inches of snow Monday night, according to the National Weather Service, which made travel difficult just after work hours. Although most of the snow was melting by Tuesday morning, more snow may be on its way this weekend.
"Over the rest of the week, temperatures will be much below normal and there's a chance of a significant snowstorm this weekend," Barry Lambert, meteorologist with the NWS in State College, said Tuesday.
Lambert said there is a storm developing in the Midwest that will reach central Pennsylvania late Sunday evening or Monday morning. Depending on its trajectory, it will either bring a lot of rain or another snowstorm, he said.
"It looks like there's going to be a storm in one shape or another. Whether it will be rain or snow, it is just too early to tell," Lambert said.
On Monday, Lambert said average snowfall in Schuylkill County was 2 1/2 to 3 inches while the Ringtown area saw about 5 inches.
Over the next few days, Lambert said temperatures are going to be about 10 to 14 degrees below normal with overnight temperatures in the 20s.
"Hold on to your hats, the wind will just make the below-normal temperatures feel that much more below-normal," Lambert said.
There may also be a few periods of snowfall over the next couple days, he said.
Compared to last year, it has been a much colder winter.
"Precipitation was about the same. There was a little heavier snowfall than last year," Lambert said.
On average, he said this winter was about 2 or 3 degrees colder than last year while the start of spring last year saw temperatures in the 70s.
