GILBERTON - Road issues were hot topics at the Gilberton Borough Council meeting Thursday.
Council member Michael Van Allen said people speed on High Road, which is off Route 4030, the main road through the borough.
"The kids are in danger. A little kid almost got hit the other day," he said.
A little girl was out with her mother and somehow got separated, Van Allen said, adding the road is a very short stretch and there are not many houses on it.
Mayor Mary Lou Hannon said the speed limit on borough streets is 35 mph.
Van Allen was told by the mother who the people are that speed along the road. One lives there and the other visits, he said.
"I don't want to bury a child," Van Allen said.
Van Allen said he would speak to those involved after the meeting.
Council member Lloyd George said people do speed in the borough and he will also speak to other people in the borough who are known offenders. It was suggested that perhaps borough police Chief Mark Kessler accompany George if needed.
Mark Keirsey, a borough resident, suggested that the speed limit be lowered to 20 mph in certain areas of the borough because of the layout of the area.
The speed limit is set by the state Department of Transportation, council member Robert Wagner said.
Council President Daniel Malloy said the potholes on borough roads should be addressed as weather permits.
"We have to get these potholes as soon as this weather breaks," he said.
It was not stated where the potholes are.
