A Berks County man was jailed Monday and charged with the armed robbery of another man in Pottsville late Sunday night.
Pottsville police said Shayne Calloway, 19, of Sinking Springs, was arraigned on charges of robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, criminal mischief and firearms not to be carried without a license.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred about 11:30 p.m. near West Race and Downing streets.
Police said a 19-year-old Pottsville man told officers he was robbed of his cellphone and house keys by two men who had a gun and knife.
The victim gave a description of the robbers, and officers learned from a neighbor in the area that a man later identified as Calloway entered an apartment building at 127 N. Centre St., police said.
Officers said the victim was able to positively identify Calloway as the person who pointed a gun in his face during the robbery.
Police said officers recovered a 38 caliber revolver that Calloway had hidden inside the apartment at 127 N. Centre St. and also found the victim's cellphone that had been discarded across the street from the apartment.
When taken into custody and interviewed, police said Calloway admitted that he had used the handgun to rob the 19-year-old man.
Calloway will now have to answer to the charges before Magisterial District Judge James K. Reiley, Pottsville.
Police said Calloway was committed to Schuylkill County Prison unable to post $100,000 straight cash bail set by on-call Magisterial District Judge Anthony J. Kilker, Shenandoah.
