LST tax collector to hold sessions for public

Just days away from the IRS tax deadline, representatives of the local service tax collector for the Schuylkill County Tax Collection Committee will offer the public two opportunities to get advice on filing local Earned Income Tax forms.

Berkheimer Associates, Bangor, Northampton County, will be available from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Shenandoah Borough Hall, and from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Minersville Borough Hall, Leo Schwartz, vice chairman of the Schuylkill County TCC, said Wednesday.

"Berkheimer is just coming in to offer advice on the filing of local Earned Income Tax. Since Berkheimer doesn't have a local office, this is a way for them to meet with people face to face without people having to drive a ways to see them," Schwartz said.

The IRS tax filing deadline is April 15.

People can file their EIT tax forms if they pay with check, Schwartz said.

"They won't accept cash," Schwartz said.

In July, the Schuylkill County TCC officially dropped the Central Tax Bureau of Pennsylvania as its local services tax collector. Centax was not processing tax bills in a timely manner, officials said. Since then, the committee hired Berkheimer for the job.

In other matters, the Schuylkill County TCC is looking to change its bylaws to reduce the number of members needed for a quorum, Schwartz said.

At the Schuylkill County TCC's last meeting, held in March, there weren't enough members to make a quorum.

The committee is made up of 73 delegates, 62 from municipalities and 11 from school districts.

Proposals for a change to the bylaws will be discussed at its next meeting, slated for 6 p.m. June 25 at Schuylkill County Courthouse, Courtroom 1, Schwartz said.
