SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - The dangers of bath salts and other synthetic drugs will be discussed at Penn State Schuylkill on Tuesday.
Ken Dickinson, a trainer with the state Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, will present the topic. Dickinson is a registered pharmacist with a master's degree in health education, and lecturer and the director of marketing for Gaudenzia Inc., a nonprofit drug and alcohol treatment provider.
The nonprofit has locations locally in Fountain Springs and Pottsville.
The 6 p.m. event is in the health and wellness building on campus. It is free and open to the public.
Titled "Bath Salts and Synthetic Drugs," the topic is something people should know about, Dickinson said.
"The whole message is there is well over 100 synthetic drugs," he said.
Bath salts are illegal in Pennsylvania. He said they are "a very powerful synthetic stimulant."
He will discuss the signs and symptoms of usage and what happens when someone takes drugs, such as bath salts and other synthetic substances.
Dickinson said he gives lectures at different locations in the United States and they are well attended by law enforcement personnel, social service workers, school administrators and the general public.
"Bath salts you see more in the rural areas. You see less in the urban (areas)," he said.
