Schuylkill Haven considers teacher furloughs

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - Nine teachers could lose their jobs at Schuylkill Haven Area School District.

According to the president of the Schuylkill Haven Education Association, the teachers may find out their fates at the 7 p.m. school board meeting Wednesday in the Hale boardroom of the district administration building.

"I can confirm that that is tentative based on (school) board action," Wayne Smith said of the teachers.

Smith said the teachers were told about the possible furloughs Thursday but he would not provide their names or say how they were informed of the news.

School board President Scott Jacoby, Vice President Dr. Bernice A. Machamer, Secretary Richard Croneberger and board members Crystal McGarry and Jennifer Stoyer were called for comment Friday but did not return phone calls. Board members Eric Felty, M. Elaine Miller, Gerald Reichert and Sandy Hess could not be reached for comment.

Superintendent Lorraine Felker also did not return a call for comment Friday.

Sarah Malmberg, 18, a senior at Schuylkill Haven Area High School, said students made fliers that say "Save Our Teachers" and hung them on bulletin boards in the high school. Some students even printed the fliers on school printers Friday. Malmberg said she personally did not hand out, receive or print fliers.

Even though she said a decision has not been made by the board, Malmberg said she does not want any teachers to lose their jobs.

"We would like to see other options looked into and discussed," she said.

She knows that saving every job might not be possible but an effort should be made to try.

Agendas for the school board meetings show that the budget for the 2013-14 school year has been up for discussion. Personnel and contractual obligations have also been discussed in executive sessions, according to agendas.
