The New Castle Township supervisors approved the transfer of the liquor licence to the Schuylkill Mall Theatres in November from the estate of Susan J. Drummer and Joseph J. Umbenhauer.
Patrons will be able to enjoy beer, wine or hard liquor in The Screening Room, a 50-seat bar and restaurant set off from the theater.
"We're basically doing a soft opening," said Mark Clement, theater manager, Thursday.
He said the patrons can bring food and alcohol into the two other VIP theaters near The Screening Room, which opens today at 5 p.m. Exact hours are not established yet, Clement said.
The menu is not yet completed, but will include salads, appetizers and other items.
Schuylkill Mall manager Elaine Maneval said "we believe the addition of The Screening Room will draw in upscale clientele who is looking to enjoy a casual drink and snacks before during or after their movie. It's a unique concept and they have designed the theater in such as way that the over 21 customers can take advantage of that added feature to the theater complex."
With the $1.6 million renovations at the site, movie-goes now have eight theatres to watch movies, up from four.
"It's going to be a great addition to Schuylkill County," Clement said.
King Theatre Circuit, Philadelphia, signed a lease to operate the theater at Schuylkill Mall in October 2010.
