Anthony J. Kilker
SHENANDOAH - A 21-year-old Shenandoah man arrested by borough police in connection with an assault on Jan. 14 had 14 of 16 charges against him held to court during a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Anthony J. Kilker , Shenandoah.
Keshon L. Canyon, 124 E. Centre St., Apt. 2A was arrested by Shenandoah police Chief George Carado and charged with two counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person; one count each of firearms not to be carried without a weapon, terroristic threats and possession of a weapon; and seven counts of conspiracy.
Kilker dismissed the terroristic threat charge and one count of conspiracy and after determining the Commonwealth proved a prima facie case ordered the remaining offenses held for Schuylkill County Court.
Carado said the incident that led to the charges happened about 11:20 p.m. at the intersection of East Centre and Bower streets where officers responded to reports of shots fired and several people fleeing the scene.
At the scene Carado said five 40-caliber shell casings were received and Jeffrey Maurer, who was not injured, identified as the target of the shooting.
Carado said an assault incident three days prior led Maurer and two of his friends to go to the area to fight Canyon in retaliation.
At the scene reported Maurer told him that someone said words to the effect of who is going to take the first punch and that he agreed walking toward the group thinking he was going to fight someone one-on-one.
Carado said Maurer then reported seeing Canyon pointing a long gun at him and hearing a shot after which Mexican Jesse was seen firing several shots into the air with a handgun, point the gun at him and fire again..
A subsequent search warrant at Canyon's home uncovered a 40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun and ammunition matching the shells found at the scene, Carado said.
