Area women donned red and made their way to the "Little Red Dress Event" at The Pottsville Club on Sunday in a bid to raise awareness of heart disease.
The event was hosted by the Schuylkill Heath Auxiliary.
"February is heart month and since heart disease is the number one killer for women, we thought we could combine the event and educate women as well as make it a fun day to come out and enjoy the day," said Mary Bardell, event committee member and auxiliary liaison.
Pam Purcell, who is co-chairwoman of the event committee with Paula Ney, said representatives from Schuylkill Health System were on hand to provide health screenings, including blood pressure and bone density screenings, body mass index and diabetes education.
"I think the event is very educational and very interesting," said Sue Jochems, Pottsville.
In addition to the health screenings, there were 53 vendors selling everything from clothing, cosmetics and jewelry to crafts, kitchen items and treats. There also was a silent auction with donated items and all proceeds going to Schuylkill Health and buffet with a chocolate fountain.
Demonstrations also were among the attractions, including a presentation by the Schuylkill Racquet Club; a hair trends presentation by Domenico Mercuri, owner of The Yellow Shoppe; a cooking demonstration by Pottsville Club chef A.J. Burke and a Fashion Bug fashion show.
Jess Driscoll of the Driscoll Institute of Martial Arts led a self-defense discussion and members of the Penn State Nittany Players performed two songs.
"It was a great, great time," said Joan Deiter, Pottsville. "There were a lot of people here, which is very supporting."
Deiter also said she thought the event featured a good mixture and variety of vendors and presentations. If you didn't like one, she said, you were able to find something else enjoyable.
