SHENANDOAH - The cause of a fire that damaged a borough apartment building Monday night remains under investigation.
The blaze sent one of the occupants to the hospital and injured a borough police officer.
Shenandoah police Chief Joseph Hall was at the scene at 318 W. Centre St. with fire officials and state police fire marshal Trooper John F. Burns on Tuesday morning to try and determine what sparked the blaze.
Hall said it was determined the fire started to the rear of the property but the exact location and origin is still being investigated.
A woman living in the rear apartment was identified as Christine Hanlon.
Hall said Hanlon was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest by helicopter for respiratory burns she suffered in the fire.
A spokesperson at the Lehigh County trauma center said Tuesday that Hanlon was not listed on the roster of patients admitted to the facility.
The chief also said Patrolman Christopher Zubris suffered burns to his face when he entered the building to help the owner, Assumpa Karambelas, to safety.
Zubris received medical attention and the scene and did not require hospitalization, Hall said.
Hanlon and Karambelas were the only two occupants of the structure.
Arriving at the scene after being called about 6:30 p.m., firefighters were met with heavy fire coming from the rear of the building, facing New York Street.
Crews from Shenandoah's five companies quickly had the fire under control, containing it to the Hanlon apartment and the rear of the building.
An adjoining building at 316 W. Centre St. sustained only minimal smoke damage, Hall said.
Part of West Centre Street was closed for about an hour while the fire was extinguished and motorists directed around the scene by borough fire police.
