n Fountain Springs: The North Schuylkill High School Theatre Arts Program will present the Broadway musical "West Side Story" at 7:30 p.m. April 13 and 14 in the school auditorium. The presentation will include familiar Broadway tunes such as "Tonight," "Somewhere," "I Feel Pretty" and "America." "West Side Story" is based on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," about doomed love in the last days of the summer of 1957 on the West Side of New York City. The North Schuylkill production will feature a cast of more than 50 students in ninth through 12th grades, a stage crew of 12 and a pit band of current students and professional musicians. Members of the school's student council will serve as ushers for the shows. Tickets for each performance are $8 each and are available from cast members. n Frackville: At a recent meeting of the Frackville Rotary Club, President Suzanne Domalakes reported on attending the president-elect training session held by Rotary International at State College. She said Rotary International has engaged in a project to supply tent-like structures to those affected by natural disasters such as the earthquake in Haiti. Rotarian John E. Domalakes said the club will participate in the annual Schuylkill Keep It Pretty spring cleanup set for April 19. At 4 p.m. the Rotarians will meet at South Line Street and Industrial Highway in the Altamont section of West Mahanoy Township near Frackville. The group has participated in every SKIP cleanup since the start of the program in 1986.

n Pottsville: The Pottsville Free Public Library recently acknowledged the following memorial donations: For James B. Heller from John and Agnes Reiley; for Louis Paparazo from John and Agnes Reiley.

n Pottsville: The Pottsville Lions Club featured member Sharon Nassar as guest speaker at the March meeting. Nassar, according to a release, shared some of her life experiences growing up as a Navy man's daughter and part of a large family that relocated frequently. She said military life, traveling and how the Navy family included many more than just immediate family. She also said she stays in contact with many of the people who shaped her life in one way or another. Anyone wishing to be a guest of the Pottsville Lions may contact Lion Patsy Clews at 570-622-7238. The Pottsville Lions meet the first and third Mondays of the month at Maroons Sports Bar & Grill, Pottsville.

n Schuylkill Haven: The final lecture in the Faculty Research and Creative Accomplishments Series will be presented at Penn State Schuylkill from noon to 1 p.m. Friday. The lecture, "Partner Aggression and Coping Mechanism Among Police Officers: A New Employee Assistance Program," will be presented by Hakan Can, Ph.D., assistant professor of administration of justice. The program will be held in C101, R. Michael Fryer Conference Center in The Classroom Building and is open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

n Schuylkill Haven: Penn State Schuylkill is inviting members of the community, students, faculty and staff to attend the annual persuasive speech contest at 7 p.m. April 17 in the John E. Morgan Auditorium, Student Community Center, on campus. One student from each of the seven public speaking - CAS 100 - classes will be selected to participate in the contest. Each participant will present his or her persuasive speech to the audience and to a panel of three judges from the community, according to a campus press release. The judges will be provided with objective criteria through which they can judge each speech. Opening and closing remarks will be made by Valerie Schrader, Ph.D., assistant professor of communication arts & sciences. After deliberation, the judges will choose a first-, second- and third-place winner. The winning students will receive gift cards redeemable at the Penn State Schuylkill Bookstore. Light refreshments will be provided after the event. The public is encouraged to attend the event "celebrating the accomplishments of Penn State Schuylkill's public-speaking students," according to the release.
