Cressona man

faces DUI charge

CRESSONA - A Cressona man was arrested by state police at Schuylkill Haven and charged with DUI after a traffic stop on Route 183 in the area of Chestnut Street, at 4:40 p.m. April 6.

Police said they stopped a vehicle driven by Nicholas Phillips for suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled substance and subsequently charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance.

Phillips will have to answer to the charge before Magisterial District Judge James R. Ferrier, Orwigsburg, police said.

Multiple charges

TAMAQUA - A borough man faces multiple charges stemming from a traffic stop in the 200 block of Market Street at 6 p.m. March 29, police said.

Borough police said Andrew Bensinger, 25, of 125 Penn St., was found to be driving a vehicle with an ineffective exhaust suppressing system and driving a vehicle without an official certificate of inspection. He was also found to be in possession of a controlled substance, police said, noting that charges are pending.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - A Schuylkill Haven man was charged with harassment and disorderly conduct following an incident at 5 p.m. Thursday at 1 May Ann Hills in North Manheim Township, police said.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Michael Paul Mason Jr., 41, had an argument with Cheryl Beth Sterner, 45, of Schuylkill Haven, and their neighbors when he caused a public commotion while highly intoxicated. Police said Mason threw a heavy glass jar at Sterner's head.

He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge David A. Plachko, Port Carbon, and was incarcerated in the Schuylkill County Prison after failing to post bail, police said.

Middleport man

charged in fight

NEW PHILADELPHIA - A Middleport man was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct following an incident at 9:15 p.m. March 28 at Mazloom's Bar, 57 Valley St.

New Philadelphia police said John Shiffert entered Mazloom's Bar to purchase an iced tea. When he was handed his change, he was confronted by Kenneth S. Angst, 50, of 23 Main St., who took his change.

A physical altercation took place with Angst striking Shiffert numerous times in the face.

Shiffert was transported to Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street where it was determined he suffered a broken nose, which required surgery with four pins.

He also suffered cuts and swelling to both eyes.

Charges were filed with the office of Magisterial District Judge David A. Platchko, Port Carbon.
