n Hamburg: The community festival Thawfest will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday to benefit the year-round work of the Hamburg Jaycees at Freedom vehicle dealership, 41 Industrial Drive. The festival will celebrate the arrival of spring with a wildlife raptor show, tricked out cars, art exhibits, kids' games, band performances, and a beer and wine garden. Admission is free but proceeds from select activities will be donated to the Hamburg Jaycees.

n Pottsville: Maternal and Family Health Services, in partnership with the Northeast Pennsylvania affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Avon Foundation for Women's Breast Health Outreach, will sponsor free breast screenings and mammograms April 20 for women who qualify, at the Schuylkill Medical Center Women's Imaging Center. Eligible women will receive both breast exams and mammograms. For more information or to make an appointment, call 877-626-6648. Transportation assistance is available. Participants must be 40 through 64 years old (women under 40 must have high risk factors or a family history of breast cancer), United States citizens, no medical insurance or limited insurance with a high deductible; of low to moderate income, such as $27,925 for one person and $37,825 for a family of two.

n Pottsville: A Chinese auction will be held Sunday at the American Hose Company, 323 W. Norwegian St. Doors will open at 11 a.m. and drawings will begin at 1 p.m. There will be a shop-and-drop from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday. All proceeds will benefit the Pottsville Area Soap Box Derby.

n Pottsville: One Book, Every Young Child Storytime, featuring "Stop Snoring Bernard" by Zachariah O'Hora, will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the Pottsville Free Public Library. There will be games, crafts, snacks and prizes for children of all ages and their parents/caregivers. Please call the library at 570-622-8880 to register.

n Schuylkill Haven: State Rep. Mike Tobash, R-125, presented a House of Representatives citation to Cadet 2nd Lt. Christina Michelle Durick for earning the General Billy Mitchell Award, given by the Civil Air Patrol. The presentation was made at Tobash's district officer here. The Civil Air Patrol cadet program, according to a Tobash press release, is designed to inspire young men and women to become leaders and good citizens. Cadets earn the Mitchell award after completing the first eight achievements of the cadet program and passing a 100-question examination on the cadet's knowledge of leadership theory and aerospace topics. After receiving the award, cadets are promoted to the rank of 2nd Lt.

n Schuylkill Haven: The Men of St. Ambrose, a parish support group, will host a yard sale from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at the parish center, 302 Randel St. Food, beverages and baked goods will also be available for patrons to buy. Everyone is welcome.

n Shenandoah: A walk to the Peddler's Grave atop the Brandonville Mountain is set for 1:30 to 3 p.m. Monday. Participants will meet at the Pennsylvania Anthracite Miners Memorial, Main and Washington streets, Shenandoah, and carpool from there. Guide Robin Tracey said the two-mile excursion is rated as easy. All ages are welcome. However, bad weather will cancel the event. RSVP by calling Teddi at 570-624-3012 or 800-621-6325. n Tremont: Perry Pillar will present "Hard Coal, Hard Times and its People," a look into the lives and condition of the anthracite coal miners and their families, at 7 p.m. Friday in the borough hall community room, 139 Clay St. Mine-related memorabilia will also be on display. The event, hosted by the Tremont Historical Society, is open to the public. Freewill offerings will be accepted.
