VALLEY VIEW - It's that time of year again to take the plunge -literally.
The third annual Pine Creek Polar Bear Plunge will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday - New Year's Day - in the Pine Creek below Valley View Park.
For $20 you can start off 2012 with a frigid jump in the creek and then enjoy a pork and sauerkraut dinner at the Valley View Gun Club.
All proceeds from the event benefit the Pine Creek Trout Nursery, a cooperative of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and Valley View Gun Club. Each year, the nursery gets approximately 6,500 fish that are grown at the nursery and used for the fishing rodeo and to stock some area creeks.
Shoes are required for those braving the elements and plunging into the water. All participants under the age of 18 are required to have a parent or guardian signature the day of the plunge.
The event isn't just for local residents, either.
"We have people from as far away as Pittsburgh who are planning to take the plunge," said Jim Reed, organizer of the event. "Relatives live in the area and when they heard about the event they figured they would participate since they will be home for the holidays."
Non-plungers are welcome to come out and witness the event. Pets are also welcome to take the plunge with their owners.
Persons can pre-register at the Valley View Gun Club or register at the gate Sunday.
