The Gap and Gap Kids stores in the Schuylkill Mall will close next month.

According to an email from Kimberly Terry, senior manager of Gap Brand Engagement, Partnerships & PR, the last day of business will be May 26.

Gap has had a presence in the mall since 1980, Terry said.

The store manager of the Gap at the Schuylkill Mall directed all questions to Gap's media relations department. Mall manager Elaine Maneval did not return a call for comment Thursday.

A real estate fact sheet from the company states the company has been "adjusting its fleet of stores since 2007."

"At Gap, the company is committed to rebalancing its specialty and outlet stores within North America, resulting in about 700 Gap specialty stores and about 250 Gap Outlet stores by year-end 2013. This represents a 34-percent decrease in the Gap specialty store fleet when compared to the end of 2007," according to an Oct. 13, 2011, press release.

It also states the company planned to introduce Old Navy stores to Japan in the next 18 months and almost triple the number of Gap stores in China from 15 in 2011 to about 45 by the end of 2012.

The company is doing its best to place employees in other positions within the organization, Terry said in an email. It was unclear Thursday how many employees would be affected.

There were 2,448 Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta stores in the U.S. as of Jan. 28, and there are 55 Gap stores in Pennsylvania, according to the company.

Worldwide, there are 3,036 of the four brand-name stores, according to the company.
