Voters can anticipate rain or wet snow with high temperatures in the upper 40s today as they head to polling sites.
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
"There could be lingering rain or wet snow early, but it should improve as the day goes on," Craig Evanego, National Weather Service meteorologist, said Monday afternoon.
On the Democratic ticket in the 17th Congressional District in today's primary election, U.S. Rep. Tim Holden looks to win his party's nod for an 11th two-year term as he is challenged by Lackawanna County lawyer Matt Cartwright in a redrawn district that includes all of Schuylkill and parts of five other counties.
State Sen. Dave Argall, R-29, who was elected in 2009 during a special election to replace the late Sen. James J. Rhoades, is challenged by West Brunswick Township businessman Brian Rich.
State Rep. Jerry Knowles, R-124, Rush Township, is challenged by New Ringgold Borough Council President Larry Padora as he seeks his second full two-year term after replacing Argall in 2009 during a special election.
There are 125 polling places in the county this year, including one new and two temporary sites.
The P.J. McGeever Center, 943 Fairmount Ave., will be the new site for Pottsville precinct 5-2. Serving as temporary sites this year are Wade United Methodist Church, 23 N. Front St., Saint Clair, for the Saint Clair North precinct, and the Sheppton/Oneida Volunteer Fire Company, 900 Center St., Sheppton, for East Union Township.
Voters looking for rides can call their party headquarters. Schuylkill County Democrats can call 570-622-3155 and Schuylkill County Republicans can call 570-622-1540.
The Schuylkill County Courthouse will be closed for today's primary and will re-open Wednesday.
The county commissioners will hold their public meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday instead of Wednesday as election operations may run late Tuesday night.
