Spring welcomes the promise of better weather and car cruises are a great way to get out and enjoy it.
The Schuylkill Valley Corvette Club will kick off the season with its annual Cruise-in on Sunday at Bubeck Park, Schuylkill Haven.
"This is not a Corvette cruise. It's more of just get out your cars and come hang out," said Bob Madrigal, club president.
Between 500 and 1,000 people will attend, he said, including families out for a day in the park.
"It's a beautiful park and they let us use the whole thing for this," Madrigal said. "People can get together and have a good time."
There will be all kinds of cars at this "open" show, but since it also serves as a prelude to the club's fall show, naturally Corvettes will be among the classic cars and hot rods on display.
"There will be lots of hot rods there this year," Madrigal said. "Maybe 100 or so."
The types of vehicles at the show are unlimited, with past shows featuring everything from Pontiac Trans Ams to Subarus, Madrigal said.
"Everybody's welcome," he said.
There will be music by DJs and some refreshments, although there will not be vendors on the scale of the fall show.
Advance registration for the show, which starts at 2 p.m., is not required, but those wishing for a good spot can come earlier.
"Early birds are welcome," Madrigal said. "We (the club members) will probably be there and getting set up by about 10 a.m. or so."
There is no set fee to participate, but a $3 donation is requested. All proceeds will benefit the various causes the Corvette club sponsors, including the local SPCAs, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Covenant Home Care, Pottsville Soup Kitchen and more.
The Schuylkill Valley Corvette Club also donates to the Schuylkill Haven Island Park fund and supports the Great Pottsville Cruise, which in turn contributes to Lions Club charities.
