A portable ice skating rink is being installed at Rotary Park.

Three workers from the city street department and three from the Pottsville Housing Authority were busy assembling the rink Thursday.

"We won't be filling it today or anything," said Dave Clark, an employee with the city.

The weather isn't favorable for that yet, he said. Clark and the others had been at the site since 8:15 a.m. Thursday.

Superintendent of Streets Daniel E. Kelly said about half of the regulation-size rink will be installed and later taken down after the winter season.

Kelly said the rink could possibly be filled with water next week - weather permitting - after a liner is installed.

The regulation size rink - 200 feed by 85 feet- had been in storage since being taken down from its previous location at the Barefield Outdoor Recreation Complex due to renovations.

The interlocking pieces were assembled on the macadam of the former tennis court and later roller hockey area.

Using a drill, Clark secured the black brackets to the macadam. With the hit of a sledge hammer, Tyler Brackman, a seasonal employee with the housing authority, drove a stake into each bracket. Mother Nature has to provide the ice to finish the job.

Skates will be available at the site, Craig S. L. Shields, Barefield Development Corp. executive director, said previously.
